What We Do

We know that a client’s needs are not simply landscape or home specific but rather, and usually, a combination of both. The English Lady Landscape & Home’s designer, Ian, can help you with all of your home, office, or landscape projects with the same attention to detail and eco-consciousness that we give to all of our projects while respecting your budget.

His interior and exterior expertise is also very useful when buying or selling a home or property. You will love what some recommended pruning, edging, cleanup, mulch, and perhaps a new paint color on the front door and trim can do for your property. He will show you how to improve the appearance of your home inside and out to create the best selling experience possible. A consultation from Ian can also help you with lowering your offer price on a property by advising you on things that you might not have seen, know, or thought of.

Ian says “I teach people what I know so we can create the feeling they want for their home or business.” The designs I create, no matter how large or small, have to not only feel and look wonderful but have to make sense and function for long term as well. “It’s not about perfection, it’s about the details.”

The English Lady believes that everyone should be able to improve their landscape, home, or office by phasing in projects. This allows us to create the wonderful results you get while keeping an eye on the costs. You will be amazed at how we can re-energize your space with our creative and useful talents. Just like the amazing transformations we all love to see on HGTV, our designs will renew and revitalize your home, wallet, and soul.

The process is designed to filter all of your wish list items down to a realistic plan and affordable project that can be properly installed by you or a team of contractors you like. We can also manage your projects with our years of experience in this arena. Our mission is to provide creative and unique landscape and home solutions that are both beautiful and functional.

Our passionate and skilled team offers comprehensive design, decorating, and consulting services that are designed to meet and exceed all of your needs and expectations. We pay attention to all the details. Below is a list of some of the services our company provides. If you don’t see it on the list then contact us and just ask. Nothing you ask is silly, and we will address it with a smile. Enjoy your day and be sure to take a look at Photo Friday (the tab at the top of this page) to see before and after photos of some of the projects we have worked on. Hello, wondering about composting… I began one last year and wanted to know what sort of things I can put in it. I have chicken manure available from my hens, grass clippings, fall leavs, and kitchen stuff such as veggies and grains… are these things OK to use? How long should I let it sit? I wet it and turn it regularly… Appreciate any commnents or suggestions.

Luis, you are doing all the right things. The internal temperature of the compost pile should be at 155 degrees so that it can cook properly and make sure you have a good balance of green and brown material in it. Too much green and the pile will smell and not work well and too much brown it will not cook. Go onto the website http://www.theenglishlady.com and in the search box at the top right of the home page type in ‘composting’ and find any other info you may need. Good luck Maureen

    Dear English Garden Lady…
    DANDELIONS abound! arggghhhhhhh!
Please inform on how to eliminate!
    Thanks bunches! (…of dandelions? :)
    Lisa
Lisa, Dandelions are wonderful weeds, they encourage bees and butterflies which pollinate the garden. The young foliage of dandelions is wonderful as a salad green and tastes like spinach when cooked. You can also make dandelion wine with this plant which is wonderful and which my family used to make during World War II in the U.K. In case you do not like any of those ideas, you need to dig them up by hand, not leaving any of the root, but please do not use chemicals. Good luck Maureen

a lot of my tulip bulbs are coming up in clumps of 10-12 plants should these be separated , if so when and how should this be done?

    thank you ken laude
Ken, transplant the bulbs when the foliage has yellowed and make sure they are planted at three to four times deep as the size of the bulb. Separate and plant immediately. Make sure the soil drains well and top dress the area with composted manure from the garden center. Maureen

  4. Carly says:

I know how much you love roses – so I am sure you can give me the correct answer: When can I prune back my Rambling Roses? They are quite “wild” looking 4 year old plants that I have never cut back except to remove dead branches from. They are growing against arbors on a wall. They look aweful right now and I want to give them a good start for the spring season ahead. Cut back severely or just moderately? Now?

Carly, when the forsythia blooms cut back the roses severely and add composted manure and mulch around the base. Begin feeding them with an organic rose food in May, which you will find on our website on ‘what to use in the garden’ and stop feeding them in August so they can go into a slow dormancy. If you have any problems with black spot on roses or problems on the foliage of other plants use organic Pyola, which you will also find on the website. Good luck Maureen

  5. Erin says:

Is the Fall a good time to transplant Hydrangea’s? Any special treatment needed?

Erin, transplant them within the next week, do not plant them any deeper than they are in the ground now and add manure to the soil mix. After planting prune out one third of the oldest branches and some of the weakest new shoots. Water well into early November. Maureen

  6. Elga says:

Hi, I was glad to hear that one can cut back phlox after blooming, and expect more blooms to come. I read that several other plants should be sheared back after bloom, but can’t recall which ones. Is salvia one? It always looks so ratty after blooming. Any others? Elga

  7. Patricia says:

    Hi,
I cut back my hydrangeas in Fall, so no flowers…what can I do now to get flowers or to at least get them next Spring?

Patricia, do not prune the hydrangeas at all for a few years, or you will not have any bloom. Apply manure around the base and keep them watered well, as they are a wetland plant and need lots of water, as well as sun if you live on the shore and partial shade inland. Maureen

  8. Nancy says:

    Hello!
Thank you for the info on clematis pruning a bit ago. Now I am dealing frost compromised hydrangea. I have the blue summer long ( or something like that) and the buds on the old growth have been burned by that frost. Should I prune the old growth back? This is somewhat of an ongoing problem due to living in Litchfield County. I thought that the blooms were on old growth. If that is the case i may never have the luxury of old growth where I live!
    Many Thanks!
    Nancy

    Good morning Maureen and staff,
This is my third attempt at getting a garden question answered. I have a Harry Lauder walking stick tree that is not growing very fast and the new shoots grow straight. Do we cut these off and if so when? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you, Luann

Jean, It was lovely being with everyone and we will do it again soon, possibly this fall and certainly when my book is published (the info for that will be on the website). Enjoy the garden. Maureen

I just want to tell you how much I enjoyed the presentation the other evening at the Wallingfor Public Library. I love working and being in the garden and am looking forward to this season.

Catherine, hope to see you this afternoon. You can always go to the website as I put up monthly tips and ideas to help in the garden throughout the year. Also in the search box type in for example Hydrangeas and you will find among the articles care of this plant. As you can see we now have a blog and you may also ask me gardening questions on the blog. Regards Maureen

  13. Catherine says:

    Good Morning Maureen:
After years of raising my children myself, I finally have time to start beautifying my yard. I have always kept it manicured to the best of my ability and knowledge, but now it is time to focus on planting, pruning and adding color and shape. A couple of years ago, I began enjoying your spots on Lite 100.5, viewed your website, and found that you offered a yearly subscription at a cost to your web-library of knowledge to view anytime I had a shrub/annual/perenial/etc. question. I did not subscribe as I knew I had no time to work on my garden. I was excited to sign up this year, but I do not see that you offer this anymore? As I live in Enfield, I hope to attend your lecture at the Enfield Public Library on March 24th. The pictures on your website are lovely and I aspire to have a landscape worthy of compliments in the future. I look forward to meeting you. –Catherine

Huge thanks and kudos, Ian, to your crew who cleared Dad’s driveway after the “big” snow. I was in no condition to shovel more snow after 3 days of my own clearing, and the beautiful job your crew did was so welcome. They were efficient and quick — and it made a huge impact on my Dad as well. He was extremely appreciative of the job they did. 20 inches is a lot of snow, and thanks to your crew, I didn’t have to worry about Dad trying to do the job. Many many thanks!

I will definitely recommend your services!

Ian, where do I begin in thanking you for the amazing transformation that happened in my living room. After much angst in just decideing I wanted to add color to the room you were the right person to guide me through this process. I had an idea for color but nothing else. Your ideas and thoughts just kept flowing making it very easy to trust in your abilities. I loved how you used things throughout my house to create a totally different look and feel so I could stay within my budget. My living room is now very intimate and cozy. I simply love it!!

I can’t say enough good things about your crew. All were extremely neat, polite, and took great care with my property. And what hard workers as they went non stop!! It certainly showed that they took great pride in their work, as they should. I love the team approach so they go in and get the job done in a timely manner.

I need to add another great thanks for the beautiful work you did on my front steps. The old brick was crumbling and becoming a safety issue as the mortar was all broken and the columns and brick were pulling away from each other. Once again you held my hand and I trusted your suggestions on what type of stone would work as well as match and enhance my property. The results are fantastic and give the house an entirely different look.

Once again your guys worked diligently, even in the pouring rain, to complete this project. All was done with care and precision. Your guys were even thoughtful enough to stop working and move their cars while the street sweeper went by in front of my house. How’s that for service !!!

I know our paths will cross again as I hear my landscape calling your name.

Thanks so much Ian and until next time….

    Robin G. Westerly, RI
