Ian says “I teach them what I know and then they can make a decision if we are going to create the feeling they want for their home or business.” The designs we create, no matter how large or small, have to not only feel and look wonderful but have to make sense and function long term as well. “It’s not about perfection, it’s about the details.”

The following series of photos demonstrates The English Lady team’s ability to make interior changes that includes carpentry, paint, declutter, organize, furniture staging, and decorating.
We have worked with Pam in the past to revitalize her gardens and later began phasing in interior projects over time. All the paint we used was odor free and dried within 2 hours. We refinished the kitchen cabinets with Swiss Coffee color and painted the kitchen walls in Tea Cookie color. The key to any quality product is in the preparation, and believe you me there was alot of sanding to begin.

This project involved the removal of a 2×6 handrail with outdoor deck vertical rails. Our team created this lovely new handrail and complimentary paint.
Our team painted the dining room Blush Red. By moving the furniture and artwork we were able to lend new life to this existing space.
The space between the living room windows has become a focal point of the room with the addition of a direct vent gas fireplace and mounting the TV on the wall. The wall color is Pumpkin Butter. Ian chose some inexpensive houseplants from Home Depot along with accessories from Pier One.

We have been working with Sue in Essex, Connecticut over the years on various landscape projects. When we were here for the scheduled fall Ian noticed that there was some issues with some of the boards on the house and after further inspection discovered significant rot, lack of caulking in any of the joints nor around the windows, chipping glaze from the top attic window, and holes caused by Woodpecker damage. Sue and Ian decided, after detailed discussions, to repair and paint the house now because putting it off would result in more rot, warped windows, and much higher expenses later.
Before
Our team began by replacing all the damaged wood and sanding every square inch of the house. They caulked, puttied, glazed, primed as needed and finally finished the house off with two coats of low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint. Ian changed the all white house pictured above to a low luster Oat Straw color for the walls and white semi-gloss for the trim. The photos are below and new lights are on order.

They also polished the copper roof over the front door as well as they existing brass light.

Sue & Ben in Essex, Connecticut had existing front steps that were uninviting and had a bottom step that was a trip point. The steps lead to the driveway on uneven stepping stones. Our team capped the steps in bluestone, built a bluestone walk to the driveway. Custom iron rails designed by Ian finish off the area. Notice the ‘W’ in the new rails that Ian incorporated because it is the first letter of their last name.

Robin in Westerly, Rhode Island was referred to us by one of our clients. Her upstairs had flooded down into the living room and caused a bowed ceiling. She was ready for a change in color and style.
Our team began by compounding the ceiling and then painted it Cloud White. Ian chose Red Red Wine in eggshell finish for the walls and Cream White semi-gloss on the trim and mantle. He then used her furniture and different elements from around her home to stage the room, and purchased a new mirror, window panels, and accessories to create an inviting space. The color is beautiful in photos and has much more depth in person.

Sara & Scott have a home in West Hartford, Connecticut whose 1934 brick home had broken down front steps with a screen door that was awkward to enter in the corner.
Our team built new steps to extend the full width of the open space with curved, hammered bluestone steps set on brick that they antiqued and added existing moss to create the same authentic look of the home’s brick. They switched the door to hinge from the inside corner so you can enter the house with ease. While they were there they noticed a broken doorbell and replaced it.

It was brought to our attention by Robin while working on her living room in Westerly, Rhode Island that the front brick steps to her home were crumbling because the foundation was compromised.
We used round veneer stone with bluestone treads on top for her home to compliment the stone wall lining her driveway. Ian chose Pale Daffodil for the columns to compliment the green shutters of her home and lose the sameness of all white on white.

Ian, where do I begin in thanking you for the amazing transformation that happened in my living room. After much angst in just decideing I wanted to add color to the room you were the right person to guide me through this process. I had an idea for color but nothing else. Your ideas and thoughts just kept flowing making it very easy to trust in your abilities. I loved how you used things throughout my house to create a totally different look and feel so I could stay within my budget. My living room is now very intimate and cozy. I simply love it!!
I can’t say enough good things about your crew. All were extremely neat, polite, and took great care with my property. And what hard workers as they went non stop!! It certainly showed that they took great pride in their work, as they should. I love the team approach so they go in and get the job done in a timely manner.
I need to add another great thanks for the beautiful work you did on my front steps. The old brick was crumbling and becoming a safety issue as the mortar was all broken and the columns and brick were pulling away from each other. Once again you held my hand and I trusted your suggestions on what type of stone would work as well as match and enhance my property. The results are fantastic and give the house an entirely different look.
Once again your guys worked diligently, even in the pouring rain, to complete this project. All was done with care and precision. Your guys were even thoughtful enough to stop working and move their cars while the street sweeper went by in front of my house. How’s that for service !!!
I know our paths will cross again as I hear my landscape calling your name.
Thanks so much Ian and until next time….

Huge thanks and kudos, Ian, to your crew who cleared Dad’s driveway after the “big” snow. I was in no condition to shovel more snow after 3 days of my own clearing, and the beautiful job your crew did was so welcome. They were efficient and quick — and it made a huge impact on my Dad as well. He was extremely appreciative of the job they did. 20 inches is a lot of snow, and thanks to your crew, I didn’t have to worry about Dad trying to do the job. Many many thanks!
I will definitely recommend your services!

Good Morning Maureen:
After years of raising my children myself, I finally have time to start beautifying my yard. I have always kept it manicured to the best of my ability and knowledge, but now it is time to focus on planting, pruning and adding color and shape. A couple of years ago, I began enjoying your spots on Lite 100.5, viewed your website, and found that you offered a yearly subscription at a cost to your web-library of knowledge to view anytime I had a shrub/annual/perenial/etc. question. I did not subscribe as I knew I had no time to work on my garden. I was excited to sign up this year, but I do not see that you offer this anymore? As I live in Enfield, I hope to attend your lecture at the Enfield Public Library on March 24th. The pictures on your website are lovely and I aspire to have a landscape worthy of compliments in the future. I look forward to meeting you. –Catherine
Catherine, hope to see you this afternoon. You can always go to the website as I put up monthly tips and ideas to help in the garden throughout the year. Also in the search box type in for example Hydrangeas and you will find among the articles care of this plant. As you can see we now have a blog and you may also ask me gardening questions on the blog. Regards Maureen
I just want to tell you how much I enjoyed the presentation the other evening at the Wallingfor Public Library. I love working and being in the garden and am looking forward to this season.

Jean, It was lovely being with everyone and we will do it again soon, possibly this fall and certainly when my book is published (the info for that will be on the website). Enjoy the garden. Maureen
Good morning Maureen and staff,
This is my third attempt at getting a garden question answered. I have a Harry Lauder walking stick tree that is not growing very fast and the new shoots grow straight. Do we cut these off and if so when? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Luann
Hello!
Thank you for the info on clematis pruning a bit ago. Now I am dealing frost compromised hydrangea. I have the blue summer long ( or something like that) and the buds on the old growth have been burned by that frost. Should I prune the old growth back? This is somewhat of an ongoing problem due to living in Litchfield County. I thought that the blooms were on old growth. If that is the case i may never have the luxury of old growth where I live!
Many Thanks!
Nancy
Hi,
I cut back my hydrangeas in Fall, so no flowers…what can I do now to get flowers or to at least get them next Spring?
Patricia, do not prune the hydrangeas at all for a few years, or you will not have any bloom. Apply manure around the base and keep them watered well, as they are a wetland plant and need lots of water, as well as sun if you live on the shore and partial shade inland. Maureen
Hi, I was glad to hear that one can cut back phlox after blooming, and expect more blooms to come. I read that several other plants should be sheared back after bloom, but can’t recall which ones. Is salvia one? It always looks so ratty after blooming. Any others? Elga
My climbing roses were producing lots of roses and all of a sudden they are not producing any roses. They also are getting some maroon colored leafs. There are also some green leafs and then some green leafs w/ sm holes??? What can I do? Thank you for any advice you can provide!! I have good soil around them and red mulch on top of the soil.
